There are so many choices when thinking about what tattoo to get and nautical star tattoos are popular. When trying to make that decision, there are important things to consider. One thing to consider is history of whatever the choices are. A popular tattoo that many people get is the nautical star. Because they are common, many people like to know about its origins.
The word nautical in Nautical Star Tattoos refers back to sailors. This is an obvious connection because the word itself refers to things having to do with sailing. Many of the sailors early in history would navigate by using the stars at night. The North star was one thing in the sky that would allow the sailors to know where they were headed. Once the sailors knew where the north star was located, they could safely plan the trip back to where they were headed.
Because most people believe that sailors were known to be a bit superstiocious, many of them would get Nautical Star Tattoos somewhere on the body, most commonly the forearm. This became a symbol not only of the direction of the ship by using the stars at night, but it also represented the course of life for these sailors. They knew that by some miracle or chance, they would make it home safely, or to their destination. By tatooing a star on their forearm, they were hoping that they would make it back to their home.
Nautical Star Tattoos also became known by these sailors as the symbol of finding ones place in life. When seeking direction and the course of life, it would be nice to have a compass, or a north star to know the direction in which to head. Most people would say that these sailors got these tattos for that reason also. Especailly being a sailor, finding ones course in life my seem difficult at times when so much of life is left to chance, and the way the wind blew. The star is the place of hope that every person can look upon.

My friend wants me to do her newborn photos and her and her hubby want it to be dark/gothic. they both have tons of piercings and tattoos. I think were gonna be doing the shoot outside in a grassy area with lots of trees by a river. I don’t really have a clue of how to do a "dark" or "goth" newborn shoot, so any ideas or tips would be extremely appreciated!!!
Indoors would have been easier. Frilly black lace and purple/black silk under the child (easy gothic).
Outside, I don’t know, that grungy old photo feel with the vignetting might work if that’s what you’re into. Here’s a photoshop tutorial parts of which you might find useful http://www.photoshopstar.com/graphic-design/photo-effects/old-style-photo-effect/
Plain old black and white shot the right way can also give a dark gothis feel, like here; http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3052/3040844159_b1a04590c9.jpg
Also it’s a plus to use the parents as props (Cleverly letting some tattoos, piercing or dark clothing of the parents holding the child show in the frame will provide a free instant goth feel.
Anyway, there are probably lot’s of options. But with no notic and no time to think beforehand those are the things I would be force to fall back on.

So I want to get a tattoo of a pin up girl but I’m not interested in the traditional pin up girl models. I want to know if there are any websites out there with pin ups but girls with tattoos/piercings, things like that?
Just go to any tattoo studio talk to the artist and tell him what you would like to get for a tattoo and he or she will draw it up for you and than the two of you could look it over and make any changes to it.

I want to get the nautical star as a tattoo when i’m older but i was reading into the symbol’s meaning and it said that it either meant you were a marine or you were gay or lesbian.. either way meaning "finding a way to home" or just being different.
would ppl take offense to me getting it because i’m not lesbian nor a marine?
99% of people who see your tattoo won’t even give it a second look. No one really cares what others have tattooed on them. Get what you like and don’t worry about that maybe just one person might know what a nautical star means….

I would like to get 1 of each of my kids baby footprint tattooed on me but I was trying to be more creative with it and put their zodiac sign with it or around the footprints somehow? Do you think that would be too much? Should I just stick with one or the other or should I do both but not in the same area? What you think?
I personally think the zodiac signs alone is enough, but it’s your skin, if you want to have the footprints aswell then try and mix them in somehow, maybe have the footprints in black but with a white (untattood skin) zodiac sign in each?

Like this: http://www.wazu.jp/gallery/Fonts_Gothic.html
For some reason this isn’t downloading on my computer, but I’ve been looking everywhere for a Gothic font, and just end up getting the English language modified to look "gothic". Any ideas? I’m trying to sketch a tattoo
See http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/fonts-european.html#gothic .
You can find how to obtain the fonts listed elsewhere in the site: http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/fonts.html .
See also http://www.evertype.com/standards/iso10646/plane-1/gt.html for a rather old article which shows many Gothic characters.

My mum and I came up with the idea to get matching tattoos. We were thinking of some form of symbol, like family or protection or something like that.
Does anyone have any other cool ideas?
Ooh yeah, and does anyone have an idea on the placement of it too?
Over the heart, shoulder blade, calf, wrist.
Flowers are always good, you can get birth flowers or flowers that you grow, your favorite colors, black and gray. You can make a bouquet of a couple of flowers with a ribbon/banner that say’s names, or ‘family’, or ‘love’ or whatever. It can be soft and realistic, or artistic, like a pencil drawing, or bold, or stylistic, or it could be copied from jewelry or a design in fabric, etc.

Hearts can also be very individual if you play with design elements, and you can add flowers or banner ribbons, words etc.

here’s a flower made out of hearts:

or you could do little birds or ladybugs or lizards, or whatever:

there’s some good Celtic designs, like this tree of life with the triquetra:
http://www.patagoniagifts.com/files/d_2511.jpg
this is thought to be the oldest Celtic symbol and is supposed to represent the 3 stages of man: Birth, Death, Eternity, or the 3 stages of life: youth, middle age & old age:

I know they are so ridiculously common, but I really like them and have been thinking about getting one tattooed on my hip. It has meaning to me, which is important, and I know I shouldn’t care about what others think, but I don’t wanna look stupid as well. Should I get one? Or are they waaaay too common and will I look stupid with one?
i think rere_b ment common not uncommon lol.
i have one, its on my foot, me and my cousin both got it together, it ment something to us and so we got it. it is a very common tattoo
but as long as it means something to you then totally get it.
ours is rainbow, because she is a lesbian and mine because i support her, we go to marches together and other stuff
totally get it, dont care what others think.

I don’t know for sure because I think the actual Leo image is prettier but so many people get a lion tattooed, therefore they aren’t actually a Leo according to the Zodiac, and what I want to be ‘clear’ is that it is IS my zodiac sign.
Opinions?

The first one is def a better tattoo.
That second one is a squiggly line, ive def seen better astrology sign tattoos than that.
Is this your first tattoo? where on your body are you gonna do it? I think you could think of something far more creative, less cliche and less generic to represent yourself.
