My friend wants me to do her newborn photos and her and her hubby want it to be dark/gothic. they both have tons of piercings and tattoos. I think were gonna be doing the shoot outside in a grassy area with lots of trees by a river. I don’t really have a clue of how to do a "dark" or "goth" newborn shoot, so any ideas or tips would be extremely appreciated!!!
Indoors would have been easier. Frilly black lace and purple/black silk under the child (easy gothic).
Outside, I don’t know, that grungy old photo feel with the vignetting might work if that’s what you’re into. Here’s a photoshop tutorial parts of which you might find useful http://www.photoshopstar.com/graphic-design/photo-effects/old-style-photo-effect/
Plain old black and white shot the right way can also give a dark gothis feel, like here; http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3052/3040844159_b1a04590c9.jpg
Also it’s a plus to use the parents as props (Cleverly letting some tattoos, piercing or dark clothing of the parents holding the child show in the frame will provide a free instant goth feel.
Anyway, there are probably lot’s of options. But with no notic and no time to think beforehand those are the things I would be force to fall back on.

don’t use flash, and use a fast shutter speed, also, shoot away from the sun, pick a nice shadowed area.

Props will be your best friend.
Get black mesh and black roses.
do a lot of black and white.
and Post processing you can make them feel "Dark"
What they were and how they dress the baby will also be needed. Don’t be afraid to suggest things for them to wear.
i have friends like this who do a photo shoot every year they are dark not gothic but they love horror films. so we dress them up in zombi stuff and have them coming out of a swamp or whatnot.

Yes, definitely!!!
Chose a cloudy day with both clouds and sky is evident, and use black and white 200 ASA film with a red filter on it. If you use digital camera, only the red filter and programming it to black and white is relevant at 200 asa
You’ve got the mood of the choice of yours as it is on the photo.
