Are the stereotypes often associated with piercings and tattoos fading?

<< What is the writing called when it says one thing one way and upside down it says another?

  gothic style tattoos?>>

I posted this Q in another section but not very many people are answering so I guess I’ll try this:

The reason I ask is because a favorite movie of mine, Life As A House, and a criticism I have of it. At the beginning of the film a teen aged boy has a few piercings and hates his parents and listens to Marilyn Manson… As the story progresses he transforms into someone that doesn’t hate anything and begins to love his life and family, and he begins to be a happy person… And it always bugged me that as he transformed into this great loving person he took out his piercings, maybe saying (even unintentionally) that the piercings are what made him so full of hate, not that he was just full of hate… sorry for the big long spiel…

My question: is the stereotype regarding people with piercings fading (ya know that only bratty emo’-ie teens, gothic people, ‘weird’ people, and criminals have piercings, and people with piercings listen to ‘evil’ metal and hard rock)??
Why do some people continue to give in to these stereotypes?
Why do some have a hard time believing that ‘normal’ (I really hate that word) people have piercings or tattoos, that its just a small piece of metal and means next to nothing??

BTW: I don’t wear black, I wear bright colors, I love Vonda Shepard and Ally McBeal… I’m not goth, I’m not punk, I’m not ‘emo’, The two none ear piercings I have mean nothing more than my traditional ear piercings: I got them just because I wanted to…. I’m well adjusted and a honor student…

thank you and please answer kindly :)

I’d really like to hear non-pierced/non-tattooed peoples’ opinions on this….

I hope I’m helping to break the stereotype.
I’m just a 15-year-old teenager, but I’m in all honors and AP classes.. and I have an industrial piercing. I’ve never gotten into any serious trouble, I don’t party, and I don’t hate my life or try to be extremely different.
And I know that someday I’ll have to take out my industrial, but that doesn’t put me off from having it now.

To me, it’s just tacky. It might look cool now when you’re young, but only if you’re immaculate with your hair/makeup/clothes- because it’s so close to the borderline of gross trailer trash fashion that you have to work extra hard to separate yourself from it.

people do steryotype people like that i dont know why!
i feel if you have a piercing on your nose or on my lip that your very brave cause that would hurt like hell!!!
i dont have any piercings im scarred of needles.
id like my ears belly and nose pierced and id also liek to get a tatoo but a cute creative heart either on my wrist or my foot but that isnt gonna happen anytime soon.

i think people steryotype people like this because its not usual well it is now but back then anyone who had their lip pierced or any tattoos they were thought as bad people and it is carried on today.

i think your a nice person inside who likes to express themselves thats it! (=

Not sure if I can answer all of these, but I will say that opinions about tattoos are certainly changing. At my university about half of the professors under 40 have tattoos, and no one thinks anything about it. I think it has to do with how many piercings or tattoos someone has that seems to matter. If a guy has two tattoos and a ear pierced, no one thinks anything about it. If they are covered with tattoos and their face looks like a pin cushion, then people start to judge. But people who go to that extreme are making a statement, so its almost rude to ignore it. Oh, if it matters, I have one tattoo and no piercings.
