How do I pull of a gothic kind of style, but in a conservative manner?

July 22nd, 2009

<< Cool Gothic/Emo tattoos?

  How much do tattoos cost?>>

I’ve always liked the way that the gothic style of dress looks, victorian clothing, etc..but was never really into the scene kid thing, and I hate caking on makeup (aside from eyeliner) I have tattoos, but I’m not quick to label myself as anything.
Plus, I feel like I’m too old nowadays (I’m 24)

Are there any websites, or makeup tutorials I can look at? Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you!

Anyone have any ideas
Oops, repeated myself.

I’m old LOL but I would think that wearing dark/black eye make up, pale lipstick and flat ironing your hair would look goth. I’d would look at someone who dressed like that as goth. Oh and of course, black clothing! :)

scene and goth or two totally different things…
and you don’t have to cake on makeup. Being goth is about expressing yourself and not being afraid of showing who you are. If you don’t like caked on makeup that’s totally ok, don’t wear it. That won’t cause any loss of goth credibility. I myself am kinda gothy and I like more natural looks as opposed to being all dolled up. It IS possible to create a dark look without looking almost theatrical. Plus, you’re not too old to have a gothic kind of style. There’s no age limit for goths. If you want, you can wear your clothes with a victorian flare. I’m sure you could find something or make a really easy alter to modern clothes that give a victorian feel without being too out there. There is also something called corporate goth, created by the event of goth kids having to grow up and find a place in corporate America, but not wanting to lose their individuality. Maybe you should look that up, it might give you some inspiration.

On YouTube you could probably find makeup tutorials.

lol, if 24 is old, then I feel ancient!

I work full time in a corporate environment (law firm), so I’ve toned down my look a lot from when I was younger. My usual look now-a-days for work is long black skirts (Alienskin has some nice ones that are reversable too, so buying one skirt from them is like getting two) and just plain long sleeve tops or short sleeve babydoll tops (like from Target, TJ Maxx, etc). Luckily, my employers don’t mind my tattoos and my black/blonde dyed hair. For makeup, I usually just do a classic cat-eye every day and wear some wine colored lip stain - I rarely mess with eyeshadow anymore.

I’m not sure about where you could find tutorials for conservative gothy makeup - most of what you find online are made by kids who draw horrendously tacky squiggly lines around their eyes and wear black lipstick, ha!

For clothing though, you could google "corporate goth", where you will find more conservative and office friendly goth looks.

    :)

Here’s some links of shops that do have some conservative looking items, in addition to the usual OTT stuff.
