How Not to Choose a Tattoo

All About Nautical Star Tattoos
Tattoo choices abound at most tattoo parlors and you will find that it is very difficult to choose the right one for you. Careful thought should be given to the tattoo that you choose, simply because this is something that you will have for the rest of your life, unless you want to go through costly and painful tattoo removal. There are some ways that you do not want to choose a tattoo, however.
Don’t choose a tattoo when you are drunk. A tattoo chosen when you are drunk may not be something that you will appreciate the next morning when you are sober. Casper the Ghost may sound good when you have a little buzz going on, but it may not be the best choice for you to live with for the rest of your life. By choosing your tattoo when you are sober, you can better choose one that you will enjoy the rest of your life.
Don’t be pressured by your friends. Choose a tattoo on your own terms. Don’t be pressured by your friends. They are not the ones that will have to wake up with this tattoo on their body everyday. It may seem “cool” to have your girlfriend’s name on your body now, but what if you break up? By choosing a tattoo that is timeless, you can better assure that you will be satisfied with it for the rest of your life.
Don’t visit the first tattoo shop you see. Cheaper is not always better. You are placing quite a bit of trust in a person when you are allowing them to use a needle to create art on your body. Ask for references from people who have tattoos that you like the look of to find a trustworthy tattoo artist that you will be able to trust with your body. Visit a few tattoo shops that you are interested in and show them what tattoo you have in mind and get price quotes. In this way, you can know what to expect financially and you can see if you like the tattoo artist.
Safety first. When you are visiting the tattoo shop, be sure that you notice the cleanliness of the shop itself and the tattoo artists. You want to be sure that your tattoo is going to be given in a safe and sanitary manner and by watching them in action, you can evaluate their sanitation methods. Read up on sanitation practices, so that you know what should be done to keep you safe.
A tattoo is a decision that should be taken very seriously. Nothing is worse than choosing a tattoo on a whim and finding that it does not fit your personality later on down the road. Be sure that you put thought into your decision, so that it will not be something that you regret later. A tattoo should be an expression of what you are interested in and your personality. Be sure that you choose it carefully.

How did you choose your tattoo?
For my next birthday (15th) Im getting a tattoo. This is something I've wanted since I was at least 6 years old. I dont want to make the mistake of getting something I'll regret, because I'll have it forever! I really am interested in tattooing because I think its art, and your body is the canvas. I have lots of tattoo ideas that have MUCH meaning to me, and that are decreet (i.e. wont look unprofessional.) I really just can't decide which one to get that my family will approve of. So I'd Like to know how other choose?
Some ideas i have is some kind of tattoo honoring my best friend, a tattoo signifying my new founded faith in jesus, after i nearly attempted suicide, and then went through rehab to get healthy again, and to represent the strength of heart he gave me to get through it. although im thinking about one honoring my idol, John Lennon.
Serious inquires only please! thanks for the help!
oh, btw, i have permission from my parents. im a good kid! lol, and they know how much i want this

I got a tattoo after treatment for breast cancer. It was my "medal of bravery" and I chose a heart with wings…as away of expressing the love I have for living.
Choosing a tattoo should be thoughtful I am glad you are thinking about this in a serious way since it is forever, for the most part.

Hate to see someone as young as you doing this. Think how you're going to answer the question: "Why did you do that, Grandma?"

I choose my tattoo by basing it on one of my ultimate goals in life, which is to be free. I just want to live however suits me without burden, judgment or regret. So I chose a fairy. I know that may sound pretty ordinary to some but she is beautiful. She is free to fly about, oh and she's nude (though you can't see her naughty parts because of they way she is positioned.) I love it and so does all my friends. Good luck. Give it some serious thought!

its best if you choose a design that has a significance in your life. but please please try not to be tacky, to avoid this you can probably research on alphabetical characters in other forms like chinese, arabic etc. and have a word tattoed on you in that form. this way your tattoo can only be read and understood by you (like your own little secret). aside from this, your tattoo will also stand the test of time, this will never be out of style since its unique and was never a fad.

I got my tattoo for my 14th birthday and I got a blue butterfly. I picked that because my favorite color is blue and I love butterflies. You don't have to put that much thought into it, but make sure it is what you want.

It is more important to choose a good artist. I am a doctor that removes tattoos. There is a lot of good art out there but there is a lot more BAD art. Make sure you try out your tattoo by doing a temporary henna tattoo first. That way you can see the results before it is permanent. Tattoos can cost thousands of dollars to remove and green and bright blue can sometimes be impossible. Also make sure the artist doesnt go too deep. I have seen scarring from tattoos being placed too deep then even if it is able to be removed the scar will remain.
Also, obviously, clean sterile needles. The biggest risk with this is Hepatitis. Again, reputable artist.
Good Luck.

I chose a Celtic sun it represents my Mother and the ancient Druids. Cool, I see nothing wrong w/tattoos, glad you have open minded parents who do not listen to crabs about the age thing. If you did make a mistake you can always have it laser off or a new one put on top. I doubt that though, you seem smart. I would go w/ the John Lennon thing or maybe go w/what was dear to your friend. I had a buddy who was so into god but not no more, things changed. Your idol was a very kind respected spirit. Maybe go with one of the album arts. Just be sure to have a sanitary clean tattoo artist.

I got a small fire lizard tatooed behind my left ear. It takes up all the space that isn't covered by hair. I get lots of compliments. I picked this because Anne McCaffrey is one of my favorite authors, and her Dragonsong books really affected me. I wanted to be Menolly so much!
You're going to wear this for the rest of your life. You should be sure to pick something that you'll want to be reminded of for the rest of your life.
And don't forget that you can make up your own tattoo. The tattoo artist will decide if your picture is possible to duplicate, and will then take a copy of it on their machine that makes the reverse carbon that they then transfer to your skin. That is what I did for my fire lizard.

I currently have three tattoos. I have two on my back, one on my chest near my heart, and one around my right wrist. Each one has a very special meaning to me and represents a time in my life. I work in a very professional environment and only the one on my wrist shows. I spent several months on each one, decided what the reason for the tattoo was, which design spoke of that reason the clearest, and would it still speak to me the same way 50 years from now. I still have four more tattoos that I will be getting on my back before I consider my back to be done. Each tells a part of my life story.
Don't put a time table on choosing and getting a tattoo. If you make a decision by your birthday then that's great. If you're still not sure by that day then wait until you are. This will be with you the rest of your life. i know that there are tattoo removal processes that you could use, but there will always be a mark. A friend of mine had one removed and you can still see a faint outline.
Don't get any names unless they're family related. People will come and go through out your life and some of them you will NOT want to hang onto.
It sounds like your life has already been somewhat eventful. I would look for a design that represents your life up until now and speaks of a promise for a bright future. something that will keep you going on those bad days and make you even stronger on those good days. Find someone to make you a custom piece, make it as unique as you are.
Hopefully you will find something you won't regret later on.
Good luck!

I can well appreciate your eager anticipation for your tattoo. I got my first one last October, I waited until i was 24, and had wanted one since i was 14. It was a long time coming.
It sounds as if you've educated yourself quite a bit about tattooing, and that you've put some serious thought and consideration both into placement and what you're going to get. Make sure that the tattoo studio you're going to does not have an age requirement. Many around my area will not let you get tattooed if you're under 18 on your own, and require an age of 16 with parent consent. So, make sure you check that out.
The first tattoo i got is portions of van gogh's starry night inside of 10 stars in a formation…and the second one i got are mirror images of two dragons that look like they're made of stone. Obviously i had a long time to decide what i wanted, but i chose because they both mean something. i chose the starry night because i've loved the painting since i was small, the epic largeness of the sky, the use of colors, it represents a certain spirituality to me. As for the dragons, i've always loved dragons..love how powerful they are, and how they have that one legendary spot of vulnerability-only one place they can be hurt…and i identify with that. For me, it's my family. -smiles-
It sounds as if you've got some good options there, and they all mean something to you, so that is good as well. Whatever you pick, go with where your heart lies, it'll never steer you wrong.
Good luck!
