What is the meaning(’s) of the "nautical star" tattoo?

I’m thinking of getting a nautical star tattoo, I’ve searched it online and I’ve found many meanings to it and I’m still not sure of the true meaning.

Yes, it originated with sailors. It represents the north star & was supposed to be good luck & bring sailors home safely. I just got a star tattoo on my hand for my grandpa who died on May 30th. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor & covered in Navy tats, including the star. Other groups of people have since started using this tattoo but really is a sailor’s tattoo.

I’ve always thought it was a sailor symbol of destiny, getting where you’re going. It’s off of maps.

    not a lesbian thing tho.

    ok that whole nautical
star is for lesbians & bi thing
    is COMPLETELY false!

K the nautical star originally represents
a compass like finding your way home it’s on lots
of maps & they are on most compasses

it basically represents a "sense of direction"
    like the north star.

I have it tatted on my right
    wrists.

Yea & most bros & bro hoes
are really into that because it’s a symbol
for a bunch of SoCal crap… & SoCal clothing lines & all
    that stuff

apparantly gay sailors got it so they dont have to introduce themselves
as being gay, the others sailors that were gay would see it and know and then do whatever, I know this cause i have lots of tats and was going to get that star done until many tattooists were i live told me that same thing…. its just what i was told.
